In the mid-1800s, the business of home security systems began. A businessman by the name of Augustus R. Pope developed a patent called "Improvement in Electro-Magnetic Alarms" specifically for combating burglary. Then, a New England entrepreneur named Edwin Holmes, a man widely considered the burglar alarm's first inventor, bought the patent.
In New York City, burglaries were on the rise, especially in wealthier neighborhoods; Holmes felt this was the perfect place to take his business. Although advanced at the time, his first burglar alarm pales in comparison to modern-day alarms; they consisted of wires that formed a circuit, at the end of which was a bell. If a door opened or a window was broken, the circuit would activate and the bell would ring, hence the alarm.
Aside from his primary business, he also gained notoriety for developing a storage safe with an alarm system. But it wasn't just any alarm system that he made for the safe; it was an alarm that, when set off by the interruption of a wire connection, immediately contacted the police. It also had the added benefit of being silent, which wouldn't give a thief any idea that police could be on the way.
Since Holmes's time, the technology of security systems has evolved substantially. The passive infrared detector (PIR), for example, is one of the most commonly used burglar alarms today. They monitor the temperature in the area in front of a window or door, and when a new object becomes present, it causes a very small change in the temperature, and sets off the alarm.
The ultrasonic detector is another type of alarm that is used commonly around the world. They work by producing ultrasonic waves of sound; they cannot be heard by humans simply because they are ultrasonic and beyond our ability to detect. These detectors recognize a moving object moving towards or away from it because the pathways of the sound waves are interrupted by the object.
Singular devices that control different types of alarms simultaneously are called "burglar alarm control panels." They manage systems such as infrared detectors, motion detectors, and sound wave sensors. Also, they receive telephone calls from security companies when any of the alarms are set off.
In addition to burglar alarms, most companies also offer separate services that are also related to burglar alarms. These include video cameras, fire alarms, and communication systems (these are all controlled by the burglar alarm control panels which are placed on a wall at about shoulder-height. They provide controls for each system put in place, and are where phone calls are received from the companies when break-ins occur.
ADT Security Services is perhaps the most successful home security company in the world; in addition to the U. S. A. (where they are based in Boca Raton, Florida), they also contain branches throughout the Western Hemisphere, and in twenty-one different countries in Europe. Their services are classified into burglar alarms, fire alarms, and video surveillance. The simplest home security systems offered by the company can cost as little as a dollar per day, as their commercials and internet advertisements suggest.
